The St. Joseph’s Children Center is part of the St. Joseph’s Village Community Center with a former Catholic Church complex located in San Francisco’s South of Market industrial area. In close cooperation with the Client and the Architect, CLAdeveloped a comprehensive landscape plan that accommodate the existing facilities and the new expansion of the Children’s Center.

The design of the children’s playground responded to the need to provide separate play areas for children of different ages, as well as adequate access for children with disabilities. We integrated current ADA code requirements into the overall design scheme, using trex decking and sand table for access and play in the sand box.

Our team assisted the Client in defining project programming to include not only community day care services, but also accommodation for after school activities for teenage youth. CLA integrated layout of a basketball court into the landscape plans.

Because a portion of the site was dedicated to vegetable garden and public park space, we solicited program input from the community as well as the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners and the San Francisco Conservation Corporation.
