Under the direction of the City and County of San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, Cliff Lowe Associates worked on the comprehensive improvements for this existing neighborhood park. Helen Wills Park is located in the busy Nob Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. Providing only limited outdoor sports and used predominantly in the evenings by adults, the park lacked vegetation and was poorly maintained.

Improvements to the park included the construction of a new community building and a new design for the children’s play area, a basketball court and skating areas. CLA incorporated a sand box, several climbing structures, and many planting areas within and along the perimeter to create a more attractive, safe, and friendly park.

To utilize the dramatic changes in elevation on the site, CLA collaborated closely with City representatives and play equipment manufacturers to design safe and unique play structures.

Hellen Wills Park has been selected as Best New Playground by SF Weekly in 2007.
